Maybe you've heard it said that this is the "Information Age," but don't know what exactly that means. Quite simply, it means that today, information is the hot commodity which is bringing in a lot of money. Just as during the Industrial Age, industry was how people earned a living, today, more and more people sell information. Specifically, using the Internet, many have learned how to sell products online such as digital books and articles that others are willing to pay for.
Not convinced of the great potential of this market? Just do a Google search for "white papers." You'll be overwhelmed with responses. Lots of people have even started putting up blogs, since they realized that the demand for information can help them make money blogging. That's because people crave information, especially if it helps them get ahead in today's economy. You, too, can easily turn your knowledge into white papers, electronic books and audio reports. Here are the five essential steps for doing so.
Step one: Select your topic. Coming up with a basic idea for your product is the most critical part of this process. The first consideration is that it must be an area in which you're an expert. You cannot sell information that you don't possess. But it also must be information that others will see value in buying. Usually this means that buying your product must either save them money or earn them money and/or energy. Also, try to tie it into some hot topic or current trend to make it even more interesting to a general audience.
Step two: Research the topic. You'll save time if you know the subject well enough that you don't have to do much research. But even then, fill in the gaps in your knowledge by researching through the power of the Internet.
Step three: Do an outline and compose a first draft. You should not spend a lot of time on this, since only you will see it. This is just to get your thoughts down and organized. Just be certain to get all the main ideas in there. After it's done, go through the draft and polish it up. Also, make sure you've covered everything that the reader / listener needs to know to implement your plan of action.
Step four: Create your information products. This means writing or recording your final version, and then saving it in an appropriate and accessible format. If it's a print product, you can do it in a couple of ways. One of the most common is to save it as a.pdf file. You can also save it as a Word document. We should mention, though, that there is growing perceived value to audio reports, hence the idea of recording a podcast. Again, there are free programs available for doing this with just your computer and a microphone.
Step five: Use effective marketing techniques so that you can make money online as effectively as possible. This means you'll want to feature it on your blog and in other sites that you might be managing. Visit discussion forums and link to your product, and submit articles to article directories, linking to your report.
Although the method itself isn't too complicated, selling your product can be a challenging endeavor that you will have to devote a lot of your time to. Soon, if you are aggressive in your marketing, and truly know your topic, you'll be an information entrepreneur making good money for what you know.
