Wind Energy Pluses and Minuses
Residential wind turbines have come a long way over the last decade. The improved designs of today generate more power from less wind than was previously possible, thanks in part to advanced materials and technologies. Furthermore, there are plenty of styles and sizes of residential turbines on the market now, and consumers are certain to find one that meets their specifications in terms of size and power.
Advantages
Permanent energy
The wind doesn’t stop. There’s no end to the energy the wind can provide. Fossil fuels can’t make that claim. Reserves of oil and natural gas will only continue to decrease. As difficult as it may be to imagine, we will eventually have used all of those sources up. Wind energy isn’t affected by economic factors in the same way – it will always be available and affordable, unlike fossil fuels.
Energy without the bills
No matter how much wind energy you use, the price is always the same: $0.00. The sole cost associated is that which comes from installing a wind generator; after you’ve done that, wind power is absolutely free. Residential wind turbines can enable you to provide all of your own energy, so you’ll never have to pay for electricity again.
No emissions
Wind energy doesn’t produce CO2 or pollute in any way. Conversely, fossil fuels such as natural gas and coal produce dangerous quantities of CO2 and other forms of pollution. By using wind energy, you can reduce your carbon footprint significantly.
No more foreign oil
Dependence on foreign oil is a serious issue that affects us not just as individuals, but as a country. Electricity produced by wind turbines directly replaces energy that comes from foreign oil, and therefore it can make a big difference in terms of reducing dependence.
Power day and night
Wind energy can be produced at any time of day or night and in any weather, which isn’t the case with solar power. Solar panels can’t be depended on as a complete energy solution, as they only produce electricity when the sun is out. Thus, with solar panels, it’s probable that you’ll still find it necessary to pay for electricity from a power company. These restrictions don’t apply to wind power.
No problems with space or positioning
Also, even when the sun is shining, solar panels need to have the proper exposure to the sun in order to work at peak efficiency. For homes that have a lot of shade, or lack sufficient southern exposure on the roof, this can be a problem. A wind generator will generate power regardless of any of these conditions. What’s more, a wind turbine takes up less total space than solar panels, while producing the same amount of power.
Disadvantages
Installation cost
Make no mistake: a wind generator is a serious investment. This cost is more than offset by the savings that come from switching to wind energy over the long term. It’s even possible to build your own wind generator, which will help reduce that startup cost. For more information, check out wind Generator Plans.
Height needed
In order to get enough wind to produce to their full potential in terms of power, larger wind turbines [needhave] to be mounted at a certain height. It may be necessary to mount the turbine at a significant height depending on the level of surrounding buildings and trees. In these situations, it’s often necessary to mount wind generators on towers or other tall structures. This may mean that it’s necessary to obtain HOA approval or other types of permits, which in turn lead to some additional up-front cost. But, once again, constructing homemade wind generator may help with the costs.
Wind requirement
Wind turbines work best in areas with consistent wind. Of course, the more wind, the better. Locations with relatively few buildings or trees are the best in this regard. While it is possible to generate significant wind power in wooded or urban areas by placing a wind turbine on a tower, it is certainly still better and more cost-effective to generate wind power in areas that don’t have these obstacles. Plans such as those referenced above can show you you how to build a wind turbine.
These characteristics make wind power different from other kinds of power. In the majority of cases, the advantages appear to outweigh the disadvantages. As great as solar power is, even it can’t compete with wind power when it comes to generating consistent, high levels of power. The strong points of wind power in certain ways directly counter the weaknesses of solar, and vice versa. The only drawback common to both solar and wind power is the installation cost. If you’re able to build your own wind turbine, though, even this obstacle can be largely eliminated.
Am I too big for my Shetland pony mix?
I am training a 10.1 hh shetland mix pony for a lady. The pony is quite stocky and can carry her
heavier owner fine and still wants to do more than is asked. I am 5'6 so I KNOW I'll be a little tall and look stupid but I only weigh 135 lbs and her owner is about 200. I would only ride a couple times a week and walk/trot/canter and a few SMALL jumps just so she started so her owner can sell her. This pony aims to please and never acts Like it's too much for her. So is she okay for me to train and ride???? I just ask because a friend of mine warned me to watch het back. According to the owner the vet sai ahe is fine to carry the owners weight but she is 5ft. please no mean comments she isn't a permanent mount I'm training her thanks!!
well there are a lot of factors that come into riding smaller ponies and most of it actually doesn't come down to the height of the rider [as long as your feet are not on the ground]
- first it would be your weight 60 kgs is about the MAX a shetland pony thats a 8-9hh pure breed shetland can take as a casual rider for long periods of time
- the ponies bone has to be fused so generally you will want it to be 4 preferably 5 yo so you dont do damage same with any horse
- YOU must have good balance
if the pony you are riding has more shetland traits it should be fine shetlands are VERY strong for there size group
but if that pony can take you at a canter without any problem well there your answer and you can jump him with ease - he can take you
well i see no problem its good to hear a smaller pony is being worked like a horse to many people act like there dogs and there a horse is a horse no mater what size they can all do the same amount of damage, infact i know people who ride 18hh Thoroughbred and they swear they will never get on a shetland again, there worst fall was off a shetland, small ponies are hard to ride they give you more of a challenge
but i can tell you it would be a different story if it was a miniature cross.... then i would say no mini's are not useful other then pulling carts and leading small children they are not riding horses
of course not all shetlands are the same but if this horse can buck hurls itself over jumps and be extermly naughty if a horse was in pain it wouldn't even be able to trot let alone canter
Breakfast Topic: How do you feel after spending time with archaeology? (wowinsider)
_This Breakfast Topic has been brought to you by Seed, the AOL guest writer
program that brings your words to WoW Insider's pages._
Right now, I'm taking a break from archaeology. I spent the days between the
U.S. holidays of Memorial Day and Labor Day digging from two to six hours,
flying up and down Kalimdor, in an attempt to get the Vial of the Sands. I
felt someone within my guild should have it. While I had other guild members
doing archaeology, they weren't dedicated -- no, the proper term is "crazy" --
enough to spend hours doing this. By the end of August, I didn't care about
the items that got me 100 or 200 gold when vendored (Cat Statue with Emerald
Eyes and Silver Scroll Case). I just wanted the recipe. Finally, after my
fifth canopic jar, there it was. I had all the mats ready, and the day I got
it, I could become a dragon.
I almost never use the mount. If someone wants a ride, I transform and we go
once or twice around town. But as my permanent ride? No. It's too big and
awkward for my ...
