CORSAGES AND BUTTONHOLES FOR FORMAL OCCASIONS
After months of anticipation, prom night is finally here. The excitement is palpable. After weeks and weeks of intense buildup, hysteria and exhausting anxieties about what to do about the dress, the shoes, the hair, the bag, the make-up, the jewellery, the pimple, the partner – the big day has finally dawned..... But hang on a sec – one more thing – what about the flowers?.
Which flowers? The time-honoured tradition of presenting floral arrangements for men and ladies to wear on their formal attire when attending formal occasions such as dances, balls and proms is still respected today. Beautiful blooms have been an integral part of prom nights, dances, school balls, weddings and black tie occasions for hundreds of years – with young men presenting their dates with corsages and the ladies presenting the men with boutonnieres (from the French word for buttonhole). Centuries ago, people believed that certain flowers were able to ward off evil spirits, disease and bad odours so men and women wore fragrant bunches on their clothing.
Nowadays, the only evil spirits at formal occasions are likely to come from a bottle – but when it comes to formal flowers, these are good omens for a great time.
Corsages and boutonierres come in many shapes and sizes, and there’s loads of inspirational ideas on the internet from leading online florists. Fresh flowers are the most popular choice, and can be accessorized with ribbons, faux gems, crystals and beads – while silk flowers look very realistic and are perfect as a keepsake.
It’s customary for the man to present his date with her corsage, which could be a dainty spray for pinning onto the dress, a wrist corsage tied onto the wrist or upper arm or a hand-held bouquet. To avoid awkward moments – guys should endeavour to do a bit of sleuthing to find out the colour of their date’s gown beforehand, because if the corsage and the dress don’t match, it’s game over from the start!
The current trend of strapless or over-the-shoulder dresses have led to the wrist or arm-tied corsage becoming more popular, said a leading Perth online florist, Airport Florist. It’s also becoming more popular for ladies to wear flowers in their hair and around the necks as garlands. Roses, orchids, rose buds and baby’s breath, stephanotis, lilies, gardenias and carnations are all popular flower choices, while berries and ferns can add a more masculine touch for the boutonierre . The boutonniere is pinned on the left lapel of the jacket and should be secured at an angle facing away from the face.
A key question is whether the corsage and boutonniere should match one another?. The best answer is probably to wear complementary styles, but not ‘matchy-matchy’ ones. It’s also important to get the shape, size and style right because as everyone knows, photographs of the big night travel round the world instantly via social media – and no-one wants to be remembered for wearing dodgy flowers!
The florist in Perth echoes what professional florists around the world say – PLAN AHEAD!. Their advice is also to refrigerate the corsages and buttonholes until the very last minute so they remain fresh and beautiful.
The prom or school dance is a once-in-a-lifetime occasion, and fresh flowers can be the cherry on the top of a memorable night out.

If your job includes going up ladders this is an identifiable risk for which your employer should identify Health and Safety and have adequate insurance to cover mishaps,if you can prove bad practice or negligence they can be in a spot of bother,if you choose to persue further.See if they are prepared to put you on company sick pay, most decent companies will give you full basic pay for 6 months and half pay for another 6 months. They can claim the state statutory pay to offset some of the costs.
Finally, FTC Takes a Stern ‘Tone’ With National Advertisers, Too (ShoeMoney)
Forever, it seems, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has been socking it to
