Industrial Shot Blast Cleaning Units - ToolsRUs
Blast cleaning uses mechanical force to clean metal and other hard surfaces rather than chemicals. Essentially, cleaning units propel some type of media or abrasive material at an object. The high velocity and abrasive surface of the media combines to clean, deburr or remove particulate matter from a wide variety of objects. There are all kinds of shot blast cleaning units, from handheld blast guns to large-scale blasting machines. Handheld shot blasters are effective at cleaning existing pipe, concrete structures or steel support beams. Freestanding blasting machine units feature large bays into or through which products go for cleaning.
Cleaning unit types include tumble, table, cylinder and spinner/hanger blasters. Regardless of the type, they essentially all have the same purpose. Shot blasters throw high-velocity particles at metal to clean or otherwise alter its exterior surface. The machines are used to finish, roughen, deburr, deflash, descale and apply surface texture on metal. Fabricated components including certain auto parts are shot blasted to deburr them and remove the residue caused by welding before they are painted. Shot blasters may also be used to remove oil, rust and other surface contaminants from things.
Custom-built shot blast cleaning units are designed with the intent of accommodating metal objects of a certain size and shape in varying quantities. Some machines have large, cylindrical compartments that hold racks of metal objects. Conveyer blasters feature a moving conveyor belt and are good for blasting steel beams or sheets. Spinner/hanger blasters are designed for cleaning parts of irregular shape, while table blasters are best suited for low-volume applications.
The media blasted at a high speed over the objects often consists of small, metallic particles. Silicon carbide, steel grit, wire cuttings, aluminium oxide and metal shot are a few examples. Sand may also be used in some cases. These media or abrasives are selected for their appropriateness in blasting a given type of object.

There are numerous industrial shot blasting applications. The aircraft and automotive industries use shot blasting to clean up fabricated parts, to strengthen components and prepare them for finishing. Other products that may undergo shot blast cleaning include cast metal and cement items.
