- The 4 Tough Choices To Make With A Gun Cabinet Purchase
Is the purchase of a gun cabinet such as a Stack-On gun cabinet on your mind? A reasonably priced alternative to a gun safe, gun cabinets can be a furniture quality piece for display or a stout, strong security fortress. Though gun cabinets are no doubt less secure than gun safes, the fact of the matter is that they do indeed prevent guns from falling into the hands of children and the average unsophisticated burglar while also making it easy for you to improve the ambiance of your trophy room or den by allowing you to display your firearms collection. These are the four choices to be made when selecting a gun cabinet:
Material/Construction
Wood or steel, those are your two choices. Think of form versus function. Are you looking for a display cabinet, or are you really looking for safe storage? While a wood cabinet is beautiful, just about any petty thief can get into one by breaking the glass. Pick the wood that goes best with your other furniture, as they come in oak, cherry and pine. More secure than a wood cabinet, but lacking in the charm and character department is the steel cabinet. You also have to consider the different brands. Stack-On security cabinet is the leading brand of steel gun cabinets.
The Space or Capacity
One single gun-do you know any gun owners with only one? Have you ever heard of a gun owner who's not pining for his next firearm, poring over the catalogs? The odds are very high that even though you only have 10, maybe 12 guns now, that it will grow in the next few years. When considering space, keep these future additions in mind. If you've got handguns and knives, consider a gun cabinet with display areas and shelves.
Lock
Any determined burglar who's got enough time would be able to get into a gun cabinet eventually. But most burglars can't be that determined, as the average home robbery lasts for less than 5 minutes. Then know that most burglars and children will be discouraged by any half way decent combination or electronic or digital lock.

Are VRADs dangerous/hazardous - really need an answer?
I work for AT&T and the store I work in had a VRAD (video ready access device) installed for our live u-verse setup. Normally these things are on sidewalks in steel cabinets. This is in our inventory room inside the store where we are in and out of - two of my co-workers use this as their office. And it's not in a cabinet, completely exposed. Are these things dangerous to be around? Especially for extended periods of time? I mean, it's got like, 6 or 8 car size batteries powering it. Is there radiation or fumes?
I worked in very close proximity to such equipment (fiberoptic communications terminals) for 10 years, including many much larger and more powerful than a VRAD, and I seem to be doing okay. You can relax.
The 6 or 8 car-size batteries are providing low voltage, like in a car. The size and quantity of them simply means that they'll function for a good long time with commercial power removed, not that they're producing dangerous voltages.
